Jesse Lee Kercheval was born in France and raised in Florida. She is the author of 15 books of poetry, fiction and nonfiction including the memoir Space, which won an Alex Award from the American Library Association, and the novel My Life as a Silent Movie.

In 2015, Editorial Yaugarú in Uruguay published her bilingual poetry collection Extranjera/ Stranger. She is also a translator, specializing in Uruguayan poetry. Her translations include Invisible Bridge/ El puente invisible: Selected Poems of Circe Maia (University of Pittsburgh Press). She is currently the Zona Gale Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she is also Director of the Program in Creative Writing.
